The Lowlands of Bergamo

Placed halfway of the River Adda, the lowland of Bergamo is, for its different naturalistic, artistic and architectural aspects, a very remarkable characteristic land. Rich in castles, villas and sanctuaries, but also in humble farmhouses and ancient country chapels, it still has many historical testimonies of well-known fights, like the battle of Corneliano, fought by Barbarossa or the very bloody battle of Agnadello, which marked the cessation of hostilities and of the subjection of the area to the Dukedom of Milan. With its enjoyable surroundings, green spaces, rivers, many art treasures and, especially, with its Viscount castles, it’s a destination for pleasant day trips.

The lowland of Bergamo is rich in fortified suburbs that recall the articulated defensive system existing in the Middle Ages. Villages like Brignano, Gera d’Adda, Urgnano, Pagazzano, Romano di Lombardia and Malpaga are worth visiting; there you can admire the Viscount castles testimoning the Venetian dominion and valuable examples of military art. Also the important centres of Treviglio, Caravaggio and
Crespi d’Adda are to be mentioned.
