By bicycle along the river Adda

Adda rises in Upper Valtellina at an altitude of 2.290m, passes through Bormio, Sondrio and all the valley till Pian di Spagna, then flows into Lake Como and goes out of it in Lecco. After crossing all the lowland it flows into the River Po, so ending up its 301km course. The reach crossed by the cycle route is entirely within Parco dell’Adda Nord, the park of North Adda, set up in 1983, whose northern boundaries are Lecco and Truccazzano.
Being parallel to the river, the route is almost entirely downhill.

The only steep stretches, demanding but brief, are at the diversions that oblige to go up the bank in order to cross the river (Paderno d’Adda and Trezzo d’Adda).
The railway stations of Calolziocorte and Cassano d’Adda are suggested as starting and arrival points of the route: like so you can reach the itinerary by train, thanks to the railway service that allows bicycle transport (for information: FS railway station tel. 147-888088). The itinerary can be divided in two sections.

The first one, from Calolziocorte to Paderno, is particularly interesting from a naturalistic point of view. The river is still well preserved and the vegetation is uncontaminated.
Industrialization has only partially reached this area even if there are interesting industrial archaeology sites related to the existence, until the half of the XX century, of silk factories and spinning-mills (in Garlate, Olginate and Brivio).

The second part of the itinerary, from Paderno to Cassano, is instead really interesting for its many examples of industrial archaeology (mainly hydro-electrical power stations are still nowadays used for electricity production); and also for the many castles and fortified houses that sparkle along all the route. You have not to forget indeed that the River Adda had marked the border between the Republic of Venice and the Dukedom of Milan for many centuries. This is the reason why there are so many fortifications all over the territory.
