Bergamo.
Its castles

Thanks to its environmental characteristics and its geographic position between Venice and Milan, Bergamo’s territory has been the object of the expansionistic goals of these two dominions. That’s the reason why so many  fortifications and castles were built in the province of Bergamo

up to the 1500'. Massive large castles, in the Viscount manner, such as Malpaga, Pandino and Romano di Lombardia, but also small fortresses which surmounted and defended the valley, like the extremely suggestive castle of Bianzano. In former times built exclusively with a defensive aim, in the course of time castles changed their role so to have a civil use. Nowadays they can be visited especially outside; only in a few cases, on reservation, it’s possible to visit the courtyards and some inner rooms.
