In the middle of Città Alta, in Piazza Duomo, it is considered all over the world the most important monument in Bergamo. It was raised in 1100 as a vow to Mary where a more ancient church was set. Outside the Basilica has maintained its originary Romanic Greek cross shape, while inside, modified in the 1500's and in the 1600's, it has been enriched by the artistic contributions of eight centuries. The presbytery, the XIV century frescos of the transept, the big Crucifix of the “Suffering Christ”, the wood confessional by Fantoni and the grave of Donizetti are works of great importance.
